We are celebrating the power of wellness and the impact it can have on the prevention of substance abuse, recovery from addiction and general well-being.

Chris Herren’s Story

In June of 2008, within hours of a heroin overdose, Chris Herren was released from a hospital and sent back out on the street. Only partially through detoxification from the drugs and alcohol in his body, with no healthcare coverage and little money to his name, he was overwhelmed by a sense of shame, with few options and no place to turn. Thankfully, friends stepped in to support Chris – emotionally and financially – and helped him get into an extended treatment program to recover from substance use disorder. Chris has been sober since August 1, 2008 and is loving all that a life in recovery offers – fatherhood, friendship and family – while making a difference in the lives of others.

Herren Project is Making an Impact

The addiction epidemic in the United States is not slowing down. Over 46.3 million Americans have at least one addiction with only 1 in 10 able to receive the quality treatment they deserve to recover. Drug overdose deaths have tripled since 1990 with an estimated 293 people dying every day.

Since 2011, Herren Project has received numerous, daily calls for help. Sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers, all wanting to be free from the chains of drugs and alcohol. Herren Project has worked with thousands of individuals, families, students and community members from all across the country to live a life free from the negative effects of substances.

Thanks to our donors, we are making a positive impact in minimizing the effects of substance use disorder and creating a happier, healthier society…one person, one family, one community at a time.

“I am grateful to the dedicated team at Herren Project. They guided my family on our journey to recovery and taught us what we needed to know about the disease of addiction. I was able to become strong and set the boundaries needed for my son to choose recovery. I will always be thankful for their dedication to the work they do each day to help so many families.” – Lisa C.

“I think the biggest impact Herren Project Clubs has made on our students at Hungary Creek Middle School is the reminder that we all struggle – with something. It may not be drugs or alcohol, but everyone struggles. It’s given us an opportunity to learn how to cope with these issues, together. We continue to create awareness for our students based on the club activities and that has been a tremendous success.” – Josh G.

“I ran 39 miles on 6/28 to honor the 39 years of my brother’s life. In turn I received a gift I didn’t expect – the gift of community and support. I spent my life keeping my story a secret, when what I needed most was a community to know my truth. That is something the Herren Project gives fully. I found a family, by letting myself be seen and heard that day.” – Rebekah B.
